I wish you the best. Maybe there is like a cone thing the vet can put around his head, you know like the do with dogs when they get snipped. wow i just a mental image of that and it was actually kinda silly.

I hope all goes well for you and the big boy.

Owie...poor fella! Sorry to hear that it is necrosis...how old is he, anyhow? I think maybe it wouldn't hurt to give him a companion either way, unless the vet contraindicated that until he's healed up.

This might sound silly, but can he see other geckos getting their groove on? Maybe reptilian systems aren't prone to "sexual frustration" as us mammals' are, but if he gets a visual stimulus, might that trigger that sort of reaction? Do geckos have circadian rhythms on a yearly basis?

My last thought is, maybe if you can't get a cone on him, could someone come up with some sort of soft cloth blinders or hood for him while he's healing (and in the future when shedding is imminent, until he can be assisted/observed)?

Luther cannot see other geckos... except Libby, his former mate. They are in a rack system right next to each other. I do not believe geckos are affected by visual reproductive stimulation, but they do smell sex pheromones in the air when there are ovulating females nearby. Libby is not ovulating.

The topical antibiotic medication Dr. Harkewicz gave me also has an anesthetic in it to numb the irritated skin somewhat, so let's hope that helps Luther leave it alone until it can heal. LOL, the vet, his tech, and I all thought the same thing about the cone-collar!

It is funny you mention the cone collar Marcia. Heather and I were talking about that the other day! Lol

Luther was doing better, but is now even worse. He went through an entire 10-day round of topical and oral antibiotics, and started going through a shed last night. I caught it in time, and peeled him. But, he is chewing on his side again... this time to the point of half of his right side being a bloody, scabby, infected mess. I started him back on the oral and topical antibiotics. He is losing weight, and refuses ANY food... even slurry. He bites me violently when I try to apply the medicine to his side an tail, and when I try to dropper-feed him.

I am not feeling very optimistic, especially the way things have been going around here lately. I don't know what I will do if I lose Luther, too. I think God is trying to tell me something.
