Possible Eye Infection

hey there guys. i think my gecko as eye infections, but im not sure. i will tell you everything i know.

well, it all started when the humidity in my tank was down. my gecko was having a little trouble shedding, and the skin was still stuck on her head. she seemed very annoyed, so i decided that i would help her out. i thought i was careful when i helped remove the skin, but i know now that i was not. the humidity was down much farther than i would have guessed, and the old skin stuck to the new. when i removed the old skin from the head, i noticed that the eyes were a little off. i couldnt quite figure out what it was, and i was very worried initially. i then realized that the bottom lid was droopy, and it appeared that my gecko couldn't quite close its eyes quite all the way. there was a little space. i didnt know what to do, but i figured it would go back to normal, and it did in a day. however, my gecko continued to keep its eyes closed. a day or two later, i saw it open its eyes and the eyes were dilated.

this was a couple days ago, and then i noticed yesterday that the eyes were still closed. so i knew that something was wrong. i eventually got her to open her eyes, and they were very glassy and coated with discharge. it looked a lot like cataracts. i freaked out last night, and didn't know what to do.

she shed again today, and the very thick and sticky discharge came off with the head skin. so i got to take a clear look at her eyes for the first time in a couple days. the eyes were extremely dilated. i believe this is because they have been closed for a few days and because of the irritating and maybe even painful discharge. i thought that she might be blind already, but she still appears to be light sensitive and look around a little.

so my guess as to what happened is that because of the drooping eyelids, she got a little bit of the sandy substrate in her eyes and she has eye infections. now, i don't know this, but this seems to be my best guess. i would appreciate any input or help anyone can give me. what is the discharge? does she have eye infections? or not? if so, i know she needs antibiotics. do i need to go to the vet? can i help clean the eyes in the meantime? any help is greatly appreciated. im worried. thanks guys.

I agree the sand is probably partially to blame. My first leo was an adoption that had a severe eye infection to where she hadn't eaten in a very long time. You should schedule a vet appointment asap to get an antibacterial eye ointment and probably baytril as well. Change the substrate to a solid one and the gecko should turn out alright.
