Hi in my area there is supposed to be a snow storm, so I just wanted to take precautions. So I wanted know how to keep your reptiles warm if the power goes out. I’ve heard heat packs or hand warmers are good. And should I keep them in a insulated box ?

You can get 40 hour heat packs, or even those little hand warmers. To be honest, it's pretty rare that the power around here would go out for days and days (although it's been known to happen) and if they're cold for a few hours it isn't the end of the world. I'm more worried about my incubator (for which I have some 40 hour heat packs).

We had an ice storm about 2 weeks ago where my power was gone for at least 12 hours. 2 days before the storm arrived I bought several packages of those 8 hr hand warmers - found out that some of them lasted the whole 12 hrs. What I did was I took pillow cases and hand towels, packed them in nicely and placed the hand warmers amongst the fabric, then I closed the tanks and covered them with a large bath towel to secure the heat. With my snakes I actually put them in their snake bags, took 2 huge comforters (one lining the tub and the other on top of the snakes) and put them in my bathtub with the hand warmers spread out between the 2 blankets. Everybody weathered the storm well and were terribly hungry the next day (I didn't feed anyone in case the power went out again) so they all chowed down like piggies.

Stay safe guys!

We have a generator for the gecko room in cases of emergency. And if all else fails we have a wood burning stove in there also. The zombie apocalypes could happen tomorrow and my guys would still make it. :p

I'm in the storm zone as well. From what I've heard, they are saying that power outages are extremely unlikely for this particular storm. It's more of the ice storms we have to worry about. PLEASE be careful on the roads though if you must travel. Driving home from work today I watched two cars slide across all three lanes of the highway and crash into the bank.

Another thought (I'm not sure how many leos you have...) but holding them keeps them warm as well.

Aliza I am close by to you for the most part. If you lost power and it came down to it I have a generator so don't stress all too much. Just keep me posted.

Rob

Thanks very much. Can't see driving in this up to NH with 73 geckos, though! My incubator is plugged into something that will run it for a few hours off batteries if the power goes out.

Let it snow let it snow let it snow
(can you tell I'm getting a bit punchy? I'm a home care therapist and I"ve been on the road all day)
