Ive read a lot of information online about reptiles during pregnancy and how the pose a risk to the child, up to five years of age. They recommend removing the pet for that time. Thoughts??

I personally feel if one practices good hygiene there isn't a need to worry. You hear similar things about farm animals. My daughter has been around reptiles, horses, various farm animals, dogs, cats and is perfectly fine. At less than 18 months she was helping me feed the horses, clean buckets ect. She's 3 years old and I can count on less than one hand how many times shes been sick. If I'm not mistaken they say a child raised around animals tend to be less likely to have allergies. Too clean of an environment can present health risks later down the road. Exposure to germs and such builds an immune system. Obviously I'm not going to let my daughter suck on her fingers after handling an animal. But I don't carry hand sanitizer either. I'm pregnant right now and we will have all of the above around this child as well. I'll just make sure after handling any animal I wash my hands with regular soap and water.

I was born and raised on a horse farm and raised with reptiles...I've never had any issues because of it an my mom had me "riding" when I was just a month old. I agree as long as common sense is used it shouldn't be a concern.

Never herd of any problem but a cats litter box can if the cat is infected can pass things to a pregnant woman which will cause birth defects I think its called toxioplasmosis

^^ Heard of that as well. My hubby gets Kitty dooty duty haha. Although they say chances are you have been exposed to it at some point if you've owned cats. They usually get it, I believe, from catching and eating prey such as birds that have it. Either way its a nice break for me haha.

Yeah, toxo is round worm.
My cats don't have it, or go outside so I'm pretty safe. I make him do it anyways. Haha.

Well my wife tested positive for it, but fortunatally contacted it years earlier so didn;t afect my son. But it was so scary it changed my life. And by the way if your pregnant congrads, nothing in the world like being a parent.

Glad everything turned out ok! That would be extremely scary.

And Congrats as well Katie!

Wow, gratz Katie! Just wash hands often.

Most people don't know how to wash hands correctly. I see this all the time in public bathrooms.. even hospitals! Antibacterial soap + warm water + scrub for 20 seconds up to elbows.

I heard children who grow up in a house with animals have less allergy problems.

Thanks for your warm wishes guys :) We're pretty excited.
Our house is pretty full at the moment, so hopefully this little one doesnt develop allergies, that would be terrible.
The info on the net about removing reptiles from the home is a little scary, but we all practise good hygiene here, so no worries.
