i'm trying to figure out the workings of the great Punnett square. let me lay it out to you.


i'll just build it on here to make it easier for me to explain, sorry, oh yeah this is for MS het bell to MS het bell

i think that the S'S'AA are MSS Bells, S'SAA are MS Bells S'S' are MSS het Bell, S'SAa MS het Bell,and the S'Saa would be just a mack snow, but i'm totally clueless on SSAA and SSAa, would the SSAA be a normal or is that just a Bell and the SSAa be a normal het bell?

The results for the Punnett square are correct as given. I just want to add a note about the symbols.

Running the symbols for multiple loci together is a quick way to confuse oneself and the reader. Separating the loci with a space makes things clearer. In other words, S'S Aa is easier to interpret than S'SAa. Two loci are not too bad when run together, but I've done matings at the University Genetics Lab involving up to eight loci, and DdIvivpipiRyryalal (five loci) is a pain to interpret. We'd even use // to separate the alleles at each locus to make things even clearer.

The textbook convention, ever since Mendel, is to give recessive genes a lower case letter symbol and dominant genes the same letter symbol in upper case. The albino mutant gene is recessive to the normal gene. So by that convention, a is for albino, and A is for normal.

Mendel did not encounter codominant mutants like Mack snow, so he did not establish a convention for their symbolization. Later, the pro geneticists kept upper case for all non-recessive mutant genes. But they changed the symbolization for the normal gene at each locus to a plus character or the same symbol as the mutant gene with a plus character added as a superscript. By this convention, a is for albino and either + or a with + as a superscript is for normal. And S is for snow, and either + or S with + as a superscript is for normal.

This symbolism is easy to use with paper and pencil. But typewriters and these simple minded text editors will not do superscripts easily, so the superscript can be set off from the base symbol by a *, ^, or - character.

Is there a Genetics for Dummies book? It's the slow season at my job and that is the place where i normally do most of my research too bad i don't have access to the website when there are 11 people in chat, lol, but i thank all for the info that they have provided. I'm a kind of person that if i have kind of an idea i have to just throw myself out there and have people tell me if i'm wrong or right. i prefer the good ole sit down method with someone but ya know 25 years old and nonone close. So after all my rambling is there such a book, and would there be such a book that any one could recommend for genetic help. Not really just saying this is recessive and this is dom but actually helping with the composition of building the genetics on paper and helping understand them. i hope i got the meaning of what i wanted to across if not i'm worse with explaining myself over the internet then i thought, lol, anywho have a good one and thanks again
