I have a 42 gram female that is ovulating or at least it looks like it to me. I know shes too small to breed but also looks to be eggs in her shes never been exposed to a male. here are some pix of her. I want to know should i expose her to a male or just leave it be and if she lays eggs then let her lay eggs... Will she stop ovulating? only time i had a female that was too small to breed lay eggs and ovulate was in 2002 and she would just lay infertile eggs even though i bred her with a male since she was laying eggs i figured if shes going to lay she could lay some fertiles if bred but i sold her not long after that. I haven't had another small female do that again till now but she hasn't laid any eggs. she was hatched in may of 2008 by me. Thanks

Danielle

sorry for the crappy pix she was getting pissed with me lol

Even if she's ovulating, she may just absorb the eggs. Ovulating marks the potential for laying eggs, but does not lead to it necessarily. On the other hand, I guess if she actually lays eggs then it makes sense to breed her if you want to. I recommend you wait awhile and see if she does lay and then decide if you'll introduce her to a male.

I have had females ovulate around her size, breed, lay eggs and then go on a massive growth spurt... They'd gain 12-16 grams between clutches and were more than twice the size at the end of the season... I have hesitated posting this before in fear of inexperienced keepers pairing unhealthy animals thinking "hey he did so we can too"... The females I breed were more ''plump'' than yours so I think you should go with Aliza's suggestion...

I’ve actually noticed that females will generally stop laying sooner if not re-breed. Not sure how true this is for the rest of the breeders, as this is only my observation.

yeah your females are the ones you want to watch out for . males are good to go IMA at 40 as long as they know what there doing lol. but i like my females to be 50 pluss grams, every one has there own prefrance

i like mine at 50+grams too but this one i was surprised when i picked her up and looked at her closely and seen she was ovulating. I am not really inexperienced, just haven't really encountered this much and the last one just laid a clutch of eggs out of the blue. This female pictured will not be bred until bigger unless she lays a clutch of eggs or so. just figured i would get some opinions on her doing this at this weight and age. I definitely dont want her to get egg bound or anything. hopefully she will just stop ovulating and just focus more on gaining weight for next year or later this year. Thanks all.

Just throwing this out there but can you just stuff your gecko with waxies before they lay their eggs or does only healthy weight help. Im not planning on doing this obviously because my geckos only about 30grams, that'd be a lot of waxies. But I sawsomeone on another site (maybe youtube) say to do it and I was like wat!?

waxies aren't healthy for leos really, as a occasional treat they are fine or to a finicky eater that you need to get as much food into as possible then thats fine but they are much like humans eating french fries. i would stick with a healthy diet of crickets, mealworms, superworms, and roaches or whatever your leos like to eat.

IMO it would be your decision if to breed her at that weight. If you usually breed at 50 grams stick with it, it is healthier for the female. I have a bell hybino that ovulated between 30-35 grams, obviously way too small but I am sick with impatience hoping that she is at weight the next time she ovulates.

I know shes too small and don't plan on breeding her till shes at least 50 grams but if she lays eggs i probably would breed her to a male to see if she would produce fertile eggs but only if she lays 2 clutches of eggs at least. which i doubt she will.

Honestly some females Max out at that weight, but since she's not even a year old. I would just wait it out.
