Question about glaze (clay)

So I went to the craft store today and I had all the supplies to make some awesome hides for my geckos but I ran into some issues and unanswered questions so I ended up leaving empty handed.

1. I do not have access to a kiln so I would have to use either the self hardening clay or the kind you can bake in the oven.

2. Clay that is simply painted with non toxic acrylic paint is not water proof and can not be cleaned properly without some sort of sealant or glaze.

This is where I ran into problems. Every glaze/ sealant I looked at either needed to be fired in a kiln or had all sorts of health warnings. (One even said it causes birth defects!) So obviously it is not non toxic. So how do you guys who have made things out of clay use glaze?

Is glaze non toxic once it is dry? Is there a type of glaze available that does not need to be fired?

If you would like I would love to see your clay creations and please explain if and how you sealed your creation (with glaze or otherwise).

Thanks!

There is such thing as non-toxic acrylic paint and as long as it isn't vigorously scrubbed, the paint won't come off with water easily.
