Hello,
In my current set up, I only use an uth, a blue light for extra heat during the day and a red light at a lower wattage for night time viewing.
In my new set up, I am trying to create something nice and kind of natural, so I have live plants in the enclosure (from all of my research, they are all safe for gecko enclosures and with the exception of one dwarf grass from Mexico, they are all indigenous to Afghanastan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, etc.).
My plan was to use a Cobra heat matt, for 60 gal terrarium (it only gets the temps to 84 on warm side due to perlite base, and soil for the plants, which is covered with slate tile and larger pea gravel to simulate the rocky environment), so I bought a ceramic heat emitter which gets my temps to my 92 degree target on the ground level. .
I have been planning on using either a repti 2.0 bulb or grow lights for the plants. From everything I have read, the lights are not needed but will not harm geckos. I have read a few people on this site saying that lights will stress out the geckos?
I am just curious as to why lights will stress out the geckos, since in their natural habitat there is bright sunlight during the days and they tend to be nocturnal anyway.
I am seeking all opinions on this matter because the last thing I want to do is stress out my geckos. I am close to being finished with the new enclosure, I have slate rocks on both the warm and cool side that are stacked to provide additional hides and climbing areas. Therefore I used silicone to hold them together so they will not fall when the geckos are climbing around. I am giving this a full week to cure, since I have read it can cause harmful outgasses are it cures and the package recommends 48 hours, so I figure 7 full days should be plenty. Other than that I only have some cosmetic finishes to the outside of the enclosure.
I have built it myself and it is 48" long by 24" wide by 26" tall.
Thanks for your help.
