so u know how people say dont buy water cleaners/clarifiers etc. and put water in a container and leave it outside for 24-48 hrs. so im wondering if i put water in a 2 liter soda bottle, do i have to leave it outside with the cap on so nothing goes in the water or off so the nasties in the water can evaporate out??

Nasties wont evaporate out. Water will evaporate out and leave only the nasties in the bottle (with enough time). I have never heard people say that about water so I dont know the purpose of it...I would assume they believe the sun and heat will help purify the water. But a closed container in the sun is an ideal place for bacteria to grow. Wish I could help you but I don't know the reasoning for it so I dont know how to help you out.

Leaving it uncovered allows chlorine to dissipate. It's not exactly evaporation, chlorine's natural state under the kinds of conditions present on the surface of the earth is gaseous and it doesn't bond with water. It will dissipate, given time and the space to do so.

Chloramines, which are used these days in many water systems in place of chlorine, will not dissipate, which makes allowing water to sit prior to use largely pointless.

'course with leopard geckos it barely matters anyway, because the concentrations of chlorine found in municipal water supplies are very unlikely to be sufficient to harm the species. It's a bit different for amphibians and inverts, or an enclosures where the nitrogen cycle is expected... but the levels of chlorine found in tap water are really unlikely to harm a leopard gecko. The levels of some other things might... but leaving it out won't do anything about them either.

If Im correct the reason why people put water in bottles and let it sit for up to 24hours is usually Fish keepers...letting it sit allows the Chlorine to dissipate. I personally have not had any issues with putting water from the tap into my water bowls.
