This was asked on another forum and no one really had a definate answer. So I figured One of you guys would know. The question was,

Why do leopard geckos have bumps all over them? What purpose do they serve?

A few answers were camoflauge, I said maybe sensory glands. All guesses but does anyone know for sure or is it just part of their appearance?
Thanks everyone,
Kristy

well i know for one the bumps are scales but i would suspect for protecting from their natural environment since they tend to live in rocky out croppings and what not and yes possibly as a type of camofladge. i do not know if anyone can give you an exact answer.. it also could be away to catch and absord moisture.

This was taking directly from Trempers book referring to the scales. "These may serve a sensory tactile function inside dark burrows."

Thats like what I was telling them, That they could be for sensing how small of an area they could fit into. I think I would have to say both camo and sensory. There are times when my Patty is lieing infront of her hide on the brown tile and i dont even see her till I get down and look. I would think if they were more of a sleek scaled creature they may stand out on their natural substrate to larger predators like birds. Where the bumps make them look like part of the terrain. If you know what I mean.
Thank you,
Kristy
