ok having just recieved my first het today i noticed he was alot lighter in color than my normal female.

has anybody else noticed this? are your hets lighter than your normals?

also, i just switched over to paper towels for my substrate (from peat moss) and so i now have to use a humid hide.

its a tupper ware container about 3 inches high, i have a hole cut in the top, and its filled with damp peat moss.

i havent seen her use it at all, i dont think she even realizes its there. she just wanders around it. or maybe its too tall for her to climb onto?

The hide may be too tall for her. You can add a rock or something for her to climb onto the hide. Place her in or on top of the hide, you may have to do that a couple of times for her to get the point.

Unless the gene is co-dominant like the Mack Snows, hets do not show any physical differences from a normal. Het amels and/or stripes will look just like normals.

i do not think this is true. imo aft hets are alot lighter then normals. if we can see some pics, it would help.

I use plastic butter tubs for my humid hides. I would also reccomend using paper towels in the humid hide or rap the moss or whatever in paper towels.

A bit off topic, but I've found beta carotienoids (spelling?) do seem to make a bit of difference in the diet for color.

When I bought my het amel from a breeder he had about 8-10 that were all 100% het for amel. They all varied in color. I wish I had pics but i did not take my camera that day.

Here is what my female looks like next to my Amel male, she was one of the lighter colored ones and that's why I chose her.

May I ask why the moss should be wrapped? Trying to do the best I can for Hidey. I don't have the moss wrapped. Thanks.

The picture of your female (or what she looks like if that one isn't yours) is really nice. I love the coloring.

I had a young leo die from moss impaction. It's rare for that to happen, but it happened to me. Sand is usually the culprit for impactions. I suggest to people to wrap the moss in paper towels at least until the gecko's an adult. The only hides that I have loose moss in are egg laying chambers that are less likely for crix to get into. I feel that my gecko was going after a crix hiding in the moss and accidently ingested the moss.

Thanks for the compliment on Nala, I like her color too.
