I would like to use the stiky on how to build racks except i woud like to go lidless so do i just add a centimeter or 2 to the measurments for each level. Also you said that you used CCB but it isnt good for humidity. Should i use it or not? If not what is the best to use?:main_huh:

Thanks

The rack must be built to the dimensions of the tubs that you will be using.

So for example if the tub is 6" high, then you would add approximately 1/8" to the height for the shelf, so the height of each shelf would be 6 1/8".

From your quote you would like to build a lidless rack, then there is no need to add height as the example shows a lidless rack. But if you wanted lids on the containers then you will need to add height in between each shelf.

The sticky is there to tell you how to build the shelf, you will need to build the shelf based on the diamensions that your require.

Unless the ccb is subjected to alot of moisture (e.g. wet almost all the time)
then it will be fine to use unsealed. Leopard geckos do not require high moisture and if subjected to high moisture for long periods of time they will suffer from respiratory infections long before the wood begins to rot.

A couple of spills from water dishes while changing the dishes is not going to hurt it, maybe cause a water stain, but not rot the wood.

Your other options for building materials are melamine, but that will be a beast to move and carry, plywood, plastic, pre-built wire shelving units that allow for custom heights.

i didn't do any measuring when i built my racks. i assembled the bottom shelf, set some of the bins i planned to use on it, set the next shelf on top and fastened it into position. repeat. the result; a perfect snake rack for lidless bins.l 1/8" is way too much slop imo. especially if you'll ever be keeping snakes in the rack.

good luck!

I used a tv cabinet, knocked all the current shelves out, groved the bottom for my heat cable (and every shelf), set my tubs on the bottom. I then placed a piece of melamine sheeting on it (less than 1/8"), then set the next shelf on it and secured it in place. Then plulled out the spacer and did the next shelf the same way. Continued all the way up. Now I've got a big black tv cabinet with doors on it that houses my best dozen breeders. TV on top and great access to our long term pets/breeders. I'll post pics when I get home...

When I built my rack I put the tubs in place, set a piece of cardboard on top, and then laid the next shelf.

Same way I built mine and it works great. You need to buy the tubs first then build the rack with the tubs as each tub manufacturers tubs are also made a little different.

I used melamine and yes it is heavy. Too avoid this dilemma my rack has two protions and only the top bottom and middle shelves are fixed. All the others are removable using shelf pegs like on a bookshelf or in your cupboards.

i saw a video where a kid put cds on each corner of the tubs and then put the next shelf on top. the cds make a small space so you can slide tubs in and out easily.

That technique is what we do with snake racks, it works great they cant escape or push the tubs out and they slide in with no issues.
