Raising temps

Hey,
I've had my leo for a few weeks now.. The weather has been pretty good (live in north/central Ontario {Canada}). We've seen a bit of a drop in temps. I live in an old apartment building where the weather outside becomes the weather inside.. My little guy's tank has been fine, but, I think the cool side is getting too cool.. It's sitting around 76 right now. The warm side is fine, sitting around 92.. Just wondering what my best way to keep the cool side temps up, while not "overheating" the warm side and not having the UTH come on for belly heat (it's on a thermostat). Any help would be great!

Hi,
in addition to my UTH (which is also on a thermostat) I use some lights for heating up ambient air temperature. Works pretty well for me and the temps are stable. I use 2 light fixtures, one is set with blue night light bulbs and the second one has some full spectrum lights, but I guess it really depends on your tank's layout and measurements if that might be an option for your setup. The nightlights are on 24/7, the full spectrum lights about 13h per day.

I live in New England. I don't worry about the cool side. If it's too cold for the geckos they'll stay on the hot side. In winter during the day we keep the thermostat at 60. Everybody is happy and healthy.

aliza... do you have a UTH on both sides? like i said, my cool side is about 76, and i know it should be more around 80.. i just don't want my little guy getting sick because of it..

I have a UTH only on the hot side. They stay on the hot side when it's really cold and they stay on the cool side when it's really hot (like last week).

Since there have been no problems, I actually don't measure my temp on the cool side. It's 60 where the thermostat is, but most likely because there's heat on the hot side, it's somewhat warmer at ground level on the cool side as well.

I live in Michigan and it's starting to get really cool outside and I was wondering what are some more ways to keep the gecko tank warm. I have a 10 gallon tank right now with a day and night 75W bulb and a UTH it keeps the lower level about 75 but it should be warmer than that. Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

Hey there! Always wiling to help out a fellow Canadian gecko lover! :D
I live in MOntreal, Canada so I know how bad our winters can get. Right now I would say your temp are fine but you will want to get some additional heat sources soon. I use an infrared red light as an additional heat source along with a UTH. Just one of these lights placed over the center of your tank should be fine to help keep up your ambient air temps. Plus since it is a red light you can keep it on 24hrs a day and it wont disturb the geckos sleep cycle. You want to be especially careful about those night time drops in temps. Right now I am using a 50Watt red light and my temps are pretty good. About 80F on cool side and 92-100F on warm side. I will monitor the situation closely and if need be I will get a 75 or 100Watt light.

Depending on how cold your specific area is and how cold your apartment gets at night you will have to judge for yourself which Wattage is better, 50W, 75W or 100W.

Hope that helps!
