So I've caught around a dozen or so wild cricket from my backyard. My backyard is clean (no pesticides or any chemical), i usually feed them about 2 or 3 that i catch during the summer for a treat. But since i caught so many,I was just wondering if these can be raise as well? Do they need anything different than the store kind?

They just look way more meatier than the store crikets.

What about your neighbors? Crickets are known travellers. They eat everywhere. Any septic systems around? Dog poop? Random parasites/disease exposure.... Captive bred feeders for captive bred animals has always been the way to go.

I agree. Crickets in particular are known to carry several nasty parasites. Even if they are pesticide free(and I wouldn't bank my animals' health on that) they are pretty much sure to be carrying some sort of parasite. Do your animals a favor and stick to captive raised insects from reputable sources.

Some cricket breeders affected by that nasty virus killing the regular crickets are starting to breed the "black cricket" which I THINK is our native cricket. If you really wanted to look into breeding the native cricket, you would need to see how you can test for parasite in the crickets, and they don't reproduce as well as the brown crickets that the suppliers use.(that's why the cricket breeders don't use our native cricket, it's not as good of a producer).

If you wanted to raise your own crickets, I'd get some commercially available feeders, and use those, as you'll be starting with "clean" breeders. They aren't hard to breed, produce really well, and you won't have to worry over any parasites brought in from outside.
