RAPTOR's/Abnormally large eyes?

I got this raptor male from Brian G and he said it probably wouldnt be a good idea to breed him because his eyes were abnormally large. He said this is sort of a defect in the raptor gene. To me the eyes look fine, i mean hes huge and they look fine for his size. I have never heard this before so i dont know what to think of it. I dont really see a problem as he can see fine and close his eyes but I dont think ill be breeding him just incase. I just want to get a few opinions on it and if youve had this problem before. Thanks,

Justan

Do you have a picture? I think Tango's eyes (in my Avatar) are unusually large, but I don't think it's a defect.

ok...i can try to get a pic. I honestly dont think large eyes are a problem either and have never heard of that. I can tell one eye is a little bit bigger but nothing unusual.

Just to clarify, it's got nothing to do with the Raptor genetic, I was told that it occaisionally happens when the female producing the eggs is grossly deficient in vitamin A. But frankly, I don't know, I'm not a nutritionalist or a veterinarian, it could be genetic or nutritional or both. I'm not going to be doing any test breeding to find out :) I love big eyes also, they're adorable! but these are abnormal...Also, I didn't produce this gecko--he was a "freebie", he would've been euthanized if I hadn't taken him home. I just don't want people thinking that I'm selling "defective" animals!!!

Justan--I gave you that male as a gift with the understanding that you absolutely would NOT breed him! If red eyes are more important to you than color--I could swap you a perfectly healthy Raptor male for that Aptor male--you'd get more red eyed babies if you use a Raptor, but you'll get better color (and still get some with red eyes) if you use that Aptor male...

Yeah, that was pretty uncool to word it like he SOLD you a defective animal when infact it was a gift. You should have stated " Brian GAVE ME......"

DON'T BREED IT ;)

Im sorry i worded it wrong. I missunderstood you. I thought you said it was something with the raptor gene. I never said the animal was "Defective" and i really really like him. I said i wouldnt breed it i just wanted to get a few more opinions on it. He is great and i think hes a perfect pet :)

And Paul, i NEVER said he sold it to me, i said I GOT a raptor male from him. And i also never said the animal was defective. I thought he said there was some cases with this in the RAPTOR gene and i missunderstood what he said but i never said the animal was defective. Im sorry if i upset you, Brian, i just wanted a few more opinions on it and i wont be breeding him.

No worries Justan! you've done absolutely nothing wrong. You didn't upset me, I was just afraid that things could/would be misinterpreted by others. I was the one who called him "defective" (in response to:
are unusually large, but I don't think it's a defect
)

He is great and i think hes a perfect pet
he definately has that super mellow giant albino personality--he sat with me, totally relaxed and watched the entire movie: The Dark Crystal :)

Did you do anything special for your new Aptor males b-day yesterday? like make him a mealworm cake? :)

Thats ok i just didnt want this to get out of hand either. Lol i cant even get my female to sit for 15mins let alone a whole movie :) And yes actually i didnt do a mealworm cake ;) but i did get him set up in a 20L with everything he needs :) I have a question, would it be ok to house him with the female(aptor, the one you gave me)? Or do you think he may try to breed and cause problems. Thanks!

You shouldn't have him with a female if you're not breeding him since you can't really control whether they breed or not once they are housed together..

I'd keep them separate until the female is at least 45g--preferably 50+ The male would definately mate with her given an opportunity :) I would've given you a ready to breed female, but they've all already been with the Tremper Enigma male--(I REALLY want to hatch out a snake eyed Enigma!!!) :D

Justan, I was not trying to be mean in anyway, but the word "got" could be read as purchased and a oversized eye is a defect.

no harm done;)

I personally like geckos with big eyes. I think it looks cute and it doesn't effect them in any way.

Thats funny, this is something that I have wondered about for a while. I have a female that has really big eyes. No deformities just big eyes. I see nothing worng with that and she is one of my coolest looking geckos. As far as breeding. D@mn skippy I will be, I have already lined up a male for next year. Nothing is cooler than looking over and seeing those big eyes peering out at you.

Ok well she was only in there for 2 days. You think he may have tried to breed? I can move her out into her own enclosure today. Thanks!

Yes! get her in her own enclosure ASAP 2 days is more than enough time for them to breed a few times. Hopefully they were too preoccupied with acclimating to breed--can you see any tiny bite marks on the females head/neck or her tail? That would suggest that they've bred. You can call me anytime, Justan. And if you need help building that rack you were talking about, I'm more than willing to help :)
