Each instar is a time period between molts. The eggs are laid and they look like little yellow balls. They shed an external covering and enter the post embryo stage (called eggs with legs by hobbyists). After that they molt (shed) and enter the first instar stage. This is the time between the first molt (called the 1st instar molt) and the second molt (2nd instar molt). This keeps going on until you get to the end. The second to last molt is the penultimate molt which is followed by the penultimate stage. Then comes the final molt (for males at least) which is called the ultimate molt. The final stage is the ultimate or mature stage. At this time males go out looking for mates and females are able to reproduce. After this males typcally die but females continue to molt (postultimate molts).
