Rescue Gecko

Alright, hi! I am a brand new member to this forum and this is my first post!:D

First things first, I am an experienced reptile owner and currently caring for: 5 ball pythons, 1 hognose, 1 corn snake, 2 sulcata tortoises, 1 full grown iguana with no tail, 3 RES, 2 beardies, and now.. my very first gecko. I love all my animals to death and I make sure they have the very very very best care! :main_thumbsup:

But, I have never owned a gecko before so this is a first for me.

I got a call from my vet saying they had a gecko who needed a home and of course, and I would never say no. He was turned into the vet because he wasn't wanted anymore (along with it's brother who already passed). He's beyond skinny. SO SO SO SO SO skinny. Scary skinny. Vet said he's most likely blind. His eyes are closed, so it's hard to tell if he can even see. He doesn't react to my hand being around his head, or my hand moving past his face BUT I believe he can see SOME light, so thats good. He doesn't eat on his own so he's being fed Carnivore Care by Oxbow by syringe. First question, how much should I be feeding him? The vet said a couple cc's every couple of days, but I feel like that isn't enough. I feel like he should be getting 2 or 3 cc's every day, if not twice a day. He'll be getting a bath daily which he doesn't drink. I just checked his weight, a weak 25 grams :)(). As far as activeness, he barely moves.

I'm really hoping this guy pulls through, hes a cutie :)

I'll post updates and weights as much as I can!

Wish Squints some luck!:main_yes:

Welcome to GF! He is very thin and to be honest, most geckos whose pictures I've seen that look like that don't have a lot of hope, but I think it's worth a try. I'm not a vet, but I would assume you could feed him every day, just go easy at first. You could also bathe his eyes by putting a drop of clean water on your finger and then dripping it on the eye. It may be a good idea to give him a little water by syringe as well. Good luck with him.

awww poor baby :(. good luck and keep is posted.

you could also make a slurry from feeder insects and pipette that to him. i also agree with feeding him small amounts every day, if and when he starts to put weight on increase the amount.

Make sure his floor temps are optimum as this will be vital for his digestion and recovery.

oh shoot! I never realized that this actually posted. When I tried to go back to see if it submitted, I couldn't find it.. but here it is!

sooo update..

I gave him that Carnivore Care stuff for a while with a syringe and after a couple weeks I realized that he was going to need a lot more to get his weight up. Every day I would put him in a tub with crickets and meal worms and he wouldn't touch them. I would even hold them in front of his mouth with tweezers and still, nothing. Then I decided I was just gonna force him to eat a worm; I was running out of options. When he opened his mouth, I stuck a worm in it. He spat it out. I tried again, and something must have snapped in his brain because he would attack anything I put in front of his face.

Now he has his own permanant cage. He is still blind and i'm 99% sure he will never see again. But that doesn't stop him from eating. He knows where his water and food bowl are and he eats mealworms out of it, all on his own. Pretty amazing how well he bounced back.

Good luck with his continued recuperation. It's always great to see someone put time into animals that need special care, especially since it's usually humans who put those animals into that state. <3
