Alright, I took another stab at it using some of you guys tips, and I appreciate all the nice complements on the first pics, but I am just trying to get the best pictures I can and keep using that system. How are these? Better? Worse? Suggestions? Same gecko.

They show off the true colors nicely, but the dark background slows the shutter speed down and I have a hunch you are shooting i auto mode. Auto modes choose a good shutter speed and adjust the aperture of the lens accordingly. The look like the lens was wide open because the depth of field(sharp focus) is shallow.

The last you are actually focused on the tail, but we all know how hard it is to pose a gecko ;)

Well... the pictures are mostly in focus.... ;)

Really though, the colors seem off to me. I don't know the true color of the gecko but I do have an idea what it should look like. LOL :p

The background looks almost blueish?? Is it supposed to be black?

I didn't mess with the color any on the picture, I just cropped the picture to center the gecko more, then posted it on the forum. The background is black poster board, but does have a blueish look too it, I agree. I am going to have to got with white poster board I guess.
Paul, I was using auto mode, should it be ok if I use a lighter background, white?

I really prefer the white background, it's simple... and it helps the eyes not to wonder around the image, it keeps the focus on the subject, your gecko. :)

just my 2 cents... :-D

Shaun, I did not mean to imply that you changed the colors at all. Just that the background was messing with what I thought it should look like.

The first set of pics look better to me. Probably because of the background. What is your lighting set up like? Flash or not?

It is a light tent I just picked up that has two lights, one on each side. Each light has 100 watt bulbs in it (not sure of what kind, they came with it, the swirled looking light bulbs, haha), and nope, not using any flash.

I wasn't saying you was implying that Jeremy, sorry it might have sounded that way, I was just saying that I didn't do anything to the pic, so it must me something else messing with the color

An old trick I used to use...

Shoot a few pics of some crayons or in my case sharpie markers. Use primary type colors, red, blue, yellow, green and orange. Compare them on your pc screen and in real life. Do they look the same?

Unless the compact florescent lights are True daylight bulbs they might be sqewing the colors?

Try the test shots and go from there.

Shaun, Auto mode will indeed work 90% of the time and the camera will give a wide focs range with the white background. I in now way was trying to cut apart your images, only help. The colors look a bit off, but only in saturation(to me) and I don't own one to compare to.

I too think the white will be the best bet for your images, but you may need to adjust exposure(+.7) to render the white as white. That has to do with the camera metering for "18% grey", which usually reads white backgrounds as grey.

Trial and error with quickly find you the proper exposure and if you have any trouble feel free to ask ANY TIME

Jeremy has a GREAT idea!!!

Thanks Jeremy, we'll do, I am about to go try some white background shots as well, and see how they turn out.:main_thumbsup:

No Paul, that is exactly what I want, I figure posting the pics will get me the most feedback, since everyone here is always looking at gecko sites with tons of pics, and I can get the feedback I need to get my pics where they need to be. You can have awesome geckos and bad pics and it not do you any good, so I figure if I can have good pics then atleast I have that part taken care of, lol.

Sadly with all my knowledge, I have no desire to get a light tent and take awesome images. Some day though, some day :)

I hear you on bad images of nice geckos being counter productive towards sales !

What kind of camera do you have?
Can it set a custom white balance?

The best thing to do, if so... get a white balance card (gray card) and place it in the light tent to get a consistant and accurate white balance for the lighting conditions.

You could use a white index card, but generally they are not true white... still, at least you'd have a consistent color balance from one shot to the next.

I know the poses aren't the best in the world, but I am just worried about getting the lighting, background and color right, right now. Here is a couple of more shots that I just took to see if either thing helps or makes it worse.
Here is the black background with a rock, does it help the color, hurt?
RRSRock.jpg

Alright Paul, here is the same white background as the first pictures, but I adjusted the exposure up, it only goes up to +2 so I put it at +1.

How do the colors look to you now Jeremy? Any Better?

Canon Powershot SD 600 Digital Elph, I believe I can set a custom white balance (edit: it can and I am going to go try it out again)
