Sad thing

So, I was going to post this whole thread about this lucky little gecko.........she hatched 5 days after her clutchmate; I had almost thrown the egg away!! I was so happy that I had waited. :) Her tail was extra short, she was still attached to the umbilicus, and she was skinny; other than that, she looked great!! I cut her from her umbilical cord, housed her alone, gave her all the goods - a calcium dish, water dish, moist hide, mealworms in a short dish - and she was eating and pooping. Hurray!!

Then, when I went to clean tubs, poof!! She was just dead. She was about a week and a half old. It looked like she had laid down and not gotten up. :(

I've had other sad things happen as a breeder; this one just extra sucked because I thought she was lucky. Poop. :(

I'm sorry you had to go through with that.

I just experienced a loss today with a rescue hatchling at a shelter I work at.

I can only offer my deepest sympathy and major hugs.

So sorry to hear that, Debbie. It always seems harder when them seem to be getting 'out of the woods' and you get that little sense of hope! It is for me, anyway. Sounds like you really nursed that little baby, though, and gave her every possible chance. Sometimes I think they're just not meant to be.
