Safe temperature fluctuation?

What fluctuation in incubation temps have you seen as safe? Right now my incubator fluctuates about 2F and I think that's too much. I'll be looking into a new thermostat or perhaps a dimmer instead of the kind that turns on and off the power.

I have done OK with 2 degree fluctuation, though less is better. A dimmer would not be the right way to go because that would hold the output of the heat element at the same amount and the actual temperature would fluctuate with the ambient temperature. What you really mean, I think, is a proportional thermostat which is kind of like a combination of a dimmer and a thermostat: it controls the amount of output of the heater based on the temp so instead of being on/off, it can regulate how much power the heater needs to maintain the temp the best.

If you're using a heat-only incubator like a hobovator, remember that no matter what you use, if the temp in the room gets higher than the temp you want the incubator to be, it will get hotter than you want in the incubator. When I used the hobovator, I would have to keep it in the basement during the summer because I don't have AC.

I agree with Aliza. If you can control the temp of the environment the eggs will be in, shoot for about 75* so you can maintain a good incubation temp without the risk of overheating.
