Yes they can be impacted from sand and calci-sand is one of the worst.

Paper towels here but in a few months when I finish the custom cages I'll use tile. Pick up the tile, wipe it down, wash it off and you're done.

sand can caus a leo to be compacted. With adult leos ther isnt as much a risk as with babies. If u do use sand dont use calci sand like sed above use playground sand and have a dish with calcium in the cage. I have heard that sometimes leos will eat ther sand for calcium if it is calci sand. I use tile in my cages. It is easy to clean and it looks pretty cul. If u do use tile try to get some with some texture so ur leos rnt "skatin" around the tank on the slick stuff. In my quarintine cages i use paper towels for ease of cleaning and ther easy to get. Hope i helped:main_thumbsup:

^^Thats not true! This question is being asked sooo often, EVERYONE should know this. You should not EVER use sand with a leopard gecko. From hatchling to death, you shouldn't use sand. Please do not use sand at any stage in life.

I'm not trying to turn this into a debate so don't add fuel to the fire.

Yes sand is bad, yes it can impact your leopard gecko, bearded dragon and many other reptiles. Is there a 100% guarantee that it will happen? No. Some reptiles can live their whole life on a loose substrate and never become impacted and some can live on it for six weeks and form an impaction.

It's a hit and miss issue.

So your geckos life is chance? If you could prevent it, would you? I guess their life isn't worth enough to you?

Folks, let's not start yet another sand debate, shall we? There is plenty of information out there on different substrates and the pros & cons of each. A simple search of "sand" or "substrate" on the forum here will give you a plethora of opinions and experiences with different substrates. For some reason, substrate debates have a tendency of turning ugly, so please don't let this thread become another battle ground. Thank you.

Defently stay away from bark, it contains big pieces that if swallowed can be deadly. Repti bark is also meant for species with higher hummidity requirments, leos like it dry. I agree we defently dont need another sand debate.

I bought a new kind of shelf liner at Lowe's to see what it was like and have switched several tanks over to it. Like I said, no adhesive back - basically it feels like rubber and is totally washable. I didn't expect much when we bought the first roll, but it's been a couple of months and I really like it. We still have tile in a couple of tanks and I can say it is MUCH easier to clean the shelf liner (I completely take the tiles out to clean a minimum of once a week - a little OCD :p ). Just another option you could look at :main_thumbsup:
