Most people wait till they are adults. There are many threads on Substrate use throughout the forums. If you click on the search function on the top navigation bar, and type in sand in the bar, you will hear all of the negative talk about sand since it has a high percentage chance to cause impaction in your Leo's.

Enjoy,

Kyle

thanks, i feel bad for what i did to my leo when i was 12, i listened to the petstore and put the 3 month old in sand, and unfortuantly he/she died. they didnt tell me to get any source of heat or hides. now i want to come back into the hobby and "say sorry" to the gecko i mistreated. if you know what i mean.

i want to giv em a natural environment though..... plus it'll probably be a display cage in my entry way, so the first thing visitors will see is the cage.

Sand is NOT natural for leos:main_thumbsup:. If you want the most natural thing, go with slate rock:main_thumbsup:

Instead of talking about the dangers of sand, I'd like to discourage you from placing the cage where you propose. Many Leopard geckos are easily stressed. Having people constantly pass the cage, as well as the temperature fluctuations caused by opening the door (depending on where you live) can cause stress.

I wish you well on your journey into gecko ownership, and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Sand IS Natural, it is what i use for my adults you just have to find
a fine grade sand.
If your gecko licks up to much sand when you put it in you should
use some other substrate.

Russ is right put the cage somewhere else not your entry way.
You can display it somwhere else.
