Would it be alright if I were to make some hides out of Sculpey clay? As far as I know it's non-toxic and it comes in many colors so you don't have to paint it.

Just curious.

I dont see why you cant use it but i would imagine that it would be very brittle until it had been fired/glazed ???

no problem

My wife made some out of polymer clay and it was no problem.

I actually just used some sculpey the other day. Its so easy and can be hardened in the oven, its not brittle at all. It looks really cool if you mix dark red and yellow

I thought about this, too, but decided against it. It says it's 'non-toxic' but it's still not safe for food. Even after you cure it in the oven, it is porous and bacteria can grow in it. Although wood is pretty much the same. I was considering a food dish, so a hide will probably be safe as long as it's sterilized regularly.
(I got the info about porousness and the such from: http://www.makeplaydough.com/clay/index.php?page=8)

When I was at Michael's earlier today, they had a pretty nice selection of different kinds of clays. Some you don't even have to bake. I'll have to do some research, but I was planning on just building the clay around a plastic container anyway. I just need a small enough moist hide to fit in a ten gallon but with an opening large enough for an adult leo to fit into.

Thanks for the link, Ashley! :D

Im against the self hardening clays, they are very brittle, and pieces are constantly chipping off.
