setting up incubator

Hi so i decided not to incubate the first clutch from my girl as i wanted to limit the chances of something going wrong ( i had no incubator at the time and had wondered if incubating in the viv would work until it came) and on the advice from a member. Thing is now im looking to set up the incubator as Ammit should be laying in the next week or so.

So my question is should i be setting it up now to get steady temps for the eggs when they show or should the incubator be ready to go shortly after turning it on and so there is no need to keep it running until i have the eggs ?

Last question is i have vermiculite and am struggling to get a sure answer as to how much water is needed i think i would feel safer with a ratio rather than squeeze until there is no water dripping but surly that depends on the strength of the person doing the squeezing . . .

Thanks

It is quite easy to squeeze the water out of the vermiculite to get the proper ratio... It is a very reliable way of doing so... But if you want an exact ratio, it should be 1 to .8 substrate to water... So if you have 100 grams of vermiculite, you would add 80 grams of water...

Hope this helps...

It's a good idea to go ahead and get your incubator ready, monitor temps, and verify that all is working correctly. IDK how others do it but, I keep a container set up and ready to go in the incubator.

I have the incubator set up and at temp right after I do the first introduction. Then I make the incubation substrate when the eggs are laid so that it is fresh. Only takes a couple minutes.

definitely set your incubator up and dial in the temps. i have pre-loaded containers with 1:1 vermiculite set up waiting for eggs.
