Sexing confusion and possibly gravid...

While cleaning out my leo's tank today, I noticed something possibly alarming for me...

My little boy looks like he is really a she. I can no long see any pores and the bulges aren't as noticable. Not only that, but there appears to be a fairly large white 'spot' inside of the stomach...

'Spike' was kept with another gecko prior to me purchasing him/her. It was assumed that the other gecko was a female... but I'm not so sure now.

I know the picture isn't of the best quality, but I had to take it fast as my camera was dying.

Upon closer examination, I can see tiny pores in a V-shape, the V is slightly darker than the surrounding area, but it still isn't overly obvious. You really have to look closely to see the pores. From the few pictures of males that I've been able to find, the pores are very apparent.

"Spike" is about 6 months old, give or take a month due to lack of records. I've heard everything from "6 months old is still too young to determine sex" to "You should be able to tell by 3 months". Should I give him/her more time and check again in a few weeks, or should I go ahead and start looking for a more feminine name?

The reason you have heard such different things is because all leos vary greatly :main_thumbsup: Spike does look female, and it's not rare that you get surprises like this :) We had a gecko that was incubated for male and we always assumed was male, but ended up being female :main_yes: One thing to always keep in mind when it comes to these geckos, nothing is written in stone. There are general guidelines to explain what happens and why, but it's always good to keep an open mind because you never know what surprises await for you tomorrow!

Thank you both. Looks like I'll be picking up a male in September when I head up to the herp convention in Indy :main_laugh:

That just gives me another excuse to get another gecko :D

I suppose, Spike is now known as Cira

Yea I actually asked the local breeder that I am getting my gecko from. He said that he was 90% sure it was femal from the pic but he said since its only six months the pores could not be fully developed making it hard to see at the age. Well I actually hope hes right on the part of you just cant see the pores yet. :main_laugh:

awww such a cute belly! I'm sorry, I am no good at sexing them... I am just hoping my 3 month baby is a boy, after all his name is Stogey... In all honesty, I have looked at geckos parts before, hoping that I can determine my own in the future, & that one definitely looks like a girl... But, don't take my word for it... Like I said, I'm really no good at it.

I wish I knew the hatching date on her but I'm fairly sure that she must be large enough to tell by now, she's a litte over 5 inches. After a quick discussion with the "co-owner:main_laugh: " I have officially renamed her Aclacia. Regaurdless of the gender, she's my first gecko and I couldn't be happier :D
