What did you do with the tetrafluoroethane* as you were converting it?

*probably, unless it was an older fridge, in which case it may have been dichlorodifluoromethane, or a fridge from outside the U.S., in which case it could be any number of hydrochlorofluorocarbons. Doesn't really matter for the purposes of the question though.

first i ran to the store to get a real incubator

I left it in.. i just drilled a whole in the back.where there was no tubing for it.. and the part that had tubing i fold and check for leaks.. i didnt notice any..

the smell was coming form the tub with vermiculite and the eggs in it.

of course it could just be what held the smell not the originator of it.

2 of the 6 eggs may be save able.. the others had NO pink what so ever.. all are being incubated though.

the copper tubes in the back need to be cut, aired out and removed. Was it a bran new tub?

Venting the freon is actually illegal here, punishable by fines for violation of dumping laws and other environmental penalties. It's still a very common practice; but legally the disposal associated with conversion jobs requires going to an appropriate facility to have it bled off.

Technically odorless too, so if it was a strong smell he detected, then it wasn't that. I personally usually get a whiff of something chemical when it's around though, depending on the density of the stuff- it's more... sterile smelling than most air people encounter, so there's a detectable difference, though it's more an absence of things which we can detect than a smell itself. There's also antifreeze agents inside a fridge, which definitely do have a strong caustic smell and can also present a health hazard if it ended up being released in with eggs.

Both just thoughts of course. Contaminants in the hatch medium might be responsible too. Or it could have been a heating or humidity issue, based on his description of the now bad eggs.

I agree it could have been a heating issue.. temps were jumping around a bit..
But I just cant figure out the smell..

I think a little more accurate description of the smell would be ammonia.

i though of this as i was cleaning my cats litter box.. the smells were very similar.

I still think the eggs are junk..
but i put them in new substrate... and are staying very constant

I would tend to agree that the smell is probably coming from the bad eggs that where left in there. This year I haven't gotten a single dud but last year was riddled with them. The smell gets strong in a heated environment with no air ventilation.

You know you remind me of House.

You dont put things nicely... but your normally right.

Now that is funny and I would agree with it. I would be willing to bet that half the post that he has goes over the heads of many of the members. They are scratching their heads wondering what's the meaning of everything. I am sure I have been one of them at one time or another. :main_laugh:

This is soooo true...and why I really like that guy! Im not sure that its "mean" its just honest and forward...no sugary BS coating it. I actually prefer this. Not enough of that in the world now a days.;):main_thumbsup:

So im just looking at the link...it says that is "seed starter" vermiculite. Can you look on the back it should list the "components" should say 100% vermic. My bag only says "Horticultural Vermiculite" and on the bag it lists the many uses. I wonder if that your bag indicates its for seed starting that it may have fertilizer in it. Just a thought! How are things going?
