Shedding question -- stuck on mouth

My gecko is eating well and doesn't seem to have any health problems (isn't spending much time in the humid enclosure).

Just has a bit of skin stuck to the side of his mouth. I can't really help remove it because he'll move out of the way. I've tried moistening the area, but he doesn't remove it. Underneath it looks slightly swollen, there's definently a second layer of skin underneath it.

It's been this way for about a week. How concerned should I be with him?

It's a slightly darker area next to the lip, in between the mouth and the white skin. Best picture I can get.

Moistened Q-tip, over and over

If he doesn't remove it on his own - you can try lightly rubbing it (after its moistened) with your finger or a soft cotton cloth to get it off.

This is what has worked form me

I do feel that you need to get it off. Leaving dual layers of skin is not a good thing. Dont go so far as to possibly harm him - if needed - take him to a vet for removal

Good Luck!

The Q-Tip worked, the old skin is gone.

There's still some swelling and redness underneath his lip. The skin might have wrapped around there and have been inside his mouth, in which case it should go away soon since it isn't anchored to anything.

keep humidity between 40-50. It will make a big difference with shedding problems. You can achieve this by adding an extra water dish and a wet cloth over half of the screen top.

50% humidity for a leo? You're kidding right? Leos come from arid LOW humidity regions, humidity shouldn't be above 30 maybe 40% at most or you risk upper respratory issues or bacterial issues from too much moistue. What I think you might have if there is still no improvement and the shed is gone, you could have the starts of mouth rot. If it doesn't get better in a couple more days or looks worse time for the vet. Good luck.

I was going to say it already looks like mouth rot. Get some hydrogen peroxide (make sure it isn't the kind that stings when you put it on an open wound.) and put it on a q-tip and lightly apply so that it stays nice and clean. and if it doesn't clear up in a few days you should go to a vet!

I would only suggest over 50% humidity for an animal that has a really bad shed issue. I kept Tom-Tom at 60% for a couple weeks when his eye caps wouldn't come off & he recovered fine. No respiratory issues.

I agree, I always keep the humidity at 40-45 and never had any respiratory problems. If anything I had problems at first with shed and dehydration when it was under 40. There humidity hide is suppose to be around 75 so what does that tell you. They seek moist places to hide when it's too dry in the wild so that is bolony:)

You ticked me off a few weeks ago although I must admit I have been impressed lately:stunned:

The area cleared up on his mouth after he shedded again. I believe it looked better before that point, but when I checked for any shedding problems afterward he was definitely clear of any issues.
