Does anyone have information or links to information on the rules and regulations on shipping geckos from U.S. to Canada? Fees, taxes, ect.
Shipping into Canada is a total pain and VERY expensive. The best thing to do is to see if your CA customer can drive to a US border town to pick up the geckos, then they just drive them back over the border and pay a small duty. It's easy. You just ship it to a border hotel or shipping depot and the customer picks them up. Of course you need to prearrange all this carefully but we've done it this way with good success. Good luck.

I do the same thing as Ray and ship to the nearest UPS or FedEx Center at the border in the US. If you want to ship directly to Canada, you must have a valid Export Permit, vet certificates, and invoice declarations for the Canadian customs in order for the customer to pay the taxes. The only way around it would be an illegal invoice stating the gecko(s) are a gift.
The 'fee' is based on the value of whatever they are bringing in to Canada... like paying duty when we bring items back from trips to other countries.
This post has been so helpful. I wouldn't have thought about shipping to a border town. Thank you all!
The duty the customer pays driving the geckos back over the border into Canada is minimal, like $20 or so per gecko. They need to show a full invoice, species, sex, etc. The invoice must be professional looking, complete, and above all, truthful! Don't put yourself or your customer in jeopardy by lying...ain't worth it! Not being truthful to a border agent is a major offense. Do it by the book and you'll have no hassles, and the cost is minimal.
Thank you Ray. That will come in handy. In my line of work I'm always dealing with the law so that is something I know to stay on good terms with. Since this thread I have gotten a handful of questions about shipping to mexico as well. Do you have any experience with that situation? Can they do the same thing?
