I have a few little aliens and would like to harvest them to see if I could get some baby mealies soon. Should I put them on grinded up oatmeal for when and if they become beetles? How long before they become beetles?

They don't eat while they're pupae. I keep mine in a small container with nothing. I check every day or so and when they turn into beetles I move them to a container with gutload. I recommend you powder whatever you keep the beetles and mealworms on (in the blender) so it's easy to sift out the gutload and move the bugs/worms.

Thanks Acpart..

I know this is off topic but I didnt want to start anything new. Should I mix in a little bit of my calcium plus into the grinded up oatmeal to make sure they have everything they need?

You need to have them on some kind of bedding.
They dont eat, but they need something to attach their
little eggs to.
Oatmeal, bran cereal, even chopped up Cheerios!.
You dont want your bedding to fine or powdery, something
with good size grains like the oatmeal is fine.
I always put some pieces of egg flat in there to for them
to climb around on. Toilet paper cores will work too.

P.S. keep in mind that whatever bedding you use will be in
there a long time. After the aliens turn to beetles, leave
them there for 4 week. Then it takes a few weeks for the
eggs to hatch. Then it takes a few more weeks before you
are able to see the tiny babies. Then it takes several weeks
for them to grow up big enough to transfer to another container.
Durring all that time, your bedding can get funky!!

I put my aliens into the same container as my beetles. So far my beetles laid eggs and now I have a countless number of little mealies. What do you guys do when you have too many mealies?

I just feed them to the wild birds.

I sell them on craigslist for $2 per hundred or $5 per 80 grams which is about 1000. If you're breeding, you can never have too many mealies. My babies eat me out of house and home in the summer. If you don't want to do any of the above, you can send them to me.

How do you ship mealies

I have an abundance and thought of selling some. I was wondering how to package them and ship them.

You can bake them to dry them out and eat them yourself.

The ones I have received from big mealworm suppliers come in a drawstring cotton bag with a few pieces of newspaper in there for them to climb on.

If you're in the US, I would advise advertising on craigslist as I mentioned above so people have to come to you and you don't have to ship, but it's up to you.

Pupae

I have read that the Pupae can either be put into a container with some substrate or none. You probably would want some with a carrot after about 5 or so days.

It takes about 10 days to 20 days to turn to beetles. (The turning is temperature & environment driven and could take as long a 30 days.)

The beetles mature in 5 to 10 days. And will probably die in about 30 days.

The females will lay 50 to 100 eggs a day. (temperature and environment driven)

The Pupae can be eaten by mealworms and beetles.

The Eggs can be eaten by mealworms and beetles too.

So if you keep everthing together then, you should expect that your production may be lower. (There are many different set-ups that you can do. One container, several containers, a container for each month, etc.)

You can sell the extra mealworms. Divide them up and put some in the Frig. Feed them to birds or fishes. Or put them in the oven at 220 until they dry out and then put them on top of Salads. You can also grind them up and add them to flour in your baking. The mealworms are a source of protein and in many parts of the world they are eaten by humans.:main_thumbsup:

Yum, Yum.:D

I put mine in the fridge for when I dont feel like sifting through containers for an hour to feed everyone. Then when I am short on time I just grab pour and go. :)

Maybe

If you want lots and lots and lots and lots then, you may want to change your setup.

Typically the stuff that the mealies come in is Bran. But, I am not exactly sure of this.:D

I know what your talking about. Many times I've bought mealworms from the petshop and they have little wood shavings. I suggest getting somem real food in there so you know whats exactly in there
