I was wondering what sizes every one use for their hatchlings? I am trying to get my rack set up, but still not sure what size to get. Everyone's oppion would be great.
Most people use 6qt tubs but we use smaller containers because the hatchlings seem to thrive and grow faster when kept in a more confined area. All I know is, the tubs come from Wal-Mart (food storage containers with blue lids, you can get like 4 for $1) and then we move our juvies into ones we get from Dollar Tree, lol. I don't have any clue the brand or the exact size.
I use a 6quart-ish sized sterilite tub with a sandwich since rubbermaid food storage container as my moist hide. The sterilite tub looks like the size of a shoe box.
The next size up from that is the 12 quart (sweater box size). I use it for my adults.
Everyone is housed individually, except for related baby pairs. I keep them housed together until there is an obvious growth difference between the 2 (i.e., one becoming dominant). Once I notice this they are then into their own shoe boxes. The racks I have, albeit poorly made (good idea, poor execution on my part, I'm a biologist, not a carpenter - at least 7 years ago that was the case), house 30 sterilite shoe boxes or 20 sweater boxes. Broken down per shelf it's 4 sweater boxes or 6 shoe boxes. I have 30 rack units. Back in 2002 all they housed were leos; 40 breeders and the rest were hatchlings. I also had hatchlings setup in a huge wallunit I have, as well as the 6 ft tall book shelves. 2002 was awesome for me, hatching over 300 leos and 50 snakes (I only had my corn snakes and great plains rat snakes breed that year as everything else was missing a mate).
I haven't done that much work, nor had that much fun and frustration at once since then. College became more important and so did field herping; especially when one can get paid $14/hr to have open herping on a national park for a summer.
Anyhow, I'm at my gf's apt right now. When I go home I'll check the exact sizes on my sterilite tubs and post up.
I just bought those same 12 quart sweater boxes. I thought about the 4.5 quart boxes but decided to get the 6 quart since I am putting clutch mates together right now.
