you must get rid of the sand!!! my friend thought he was safe, as his poor leo was on it for 6 years, just 2 days ago he began hemorraging and is now half dead. the sand could be the problem, my leos dont seem to have an oder

yes no sand!!!!! That is a silent killer of leos!! It also is contributing to your problem. Switch to tile, repti-carpet or paper towels. Then you should not have a problem with the smell.

The sand, I've heard retains a LOT of smell, especially if not changed very often.

Honestly, I would ditch the sand for a non-particulate substrate such as paper towel, repti-carpet, or tile. This not only is safer for the gecko, but makes a THOROUGH cleaning much easier to accomplish.

I use a vinegar dilution as a weekly cleanser, and a bleach dilution as a once a month BIG cleaning and sanitizing.

+1 Sand causes impaction.

I find paper towel the easiest. Both of my geckos only poop in the same corner of the tank so I can just lift the PT in that area and change it every time they go. Then I can get away with cleaning the tank every few days instead of every day. I have both tanks in the living room and there is no smell unless you stick your head in the tank. :)

i use paper towels, and sometimes i find my viv smells funi, but i found out my problem is when the moss gets a little dry it smells, so i jst keep a squirty bottle next to the viv and make sure its always reali moist, this way it never smells

Sand can keep bacteria, which can be causing the smell. As stated impaction is another problem with sand.

Take out the sand a.s.a.p. I know pet stores say that leos are only aloud to have sand, but that's a lie. Sand is not good for them, they can eat it and then become impacted, and then die. So you can change to either paper towels, tile, or reptile carpet. I find that paper towels work the best, as they are easy to clean and cheap. :)

I use repti-carpet because I think paper towels just looks weird and cheap. No offense to anyone who uses it because it is the easiest to clean, I just dont use it. I'm thinking about switchin to tile though soon.

When you remove poop remove the sand in the immediate area as well. Then every three months replace all the sand to prevent bacteria and smells building up. This should stop it smelling as bad. When you replace the sand wash everything with a 5% bleach solution as well.
