Yeah, it's always best to read about and set up a terrarium before you buy it. There are plenty of morphs for most reptiles, and it's hard to know all of them. What pet shop do you go to? Most reptile enthusiasts rarely, or never buy from Petco/Petsmart because of the quality of their geckos, lots of them are lifeless and always sleeping.

I agree with Caleb. I got all of my geckos from Petsmart/Petco and the way they are treated varies. Which means you have a low chance of finding a healthy well treated tame gecko because they have probably been abused or have endured a low quality life when they were hatched at some Reptile farm. I only buy my geckos from Petsmart just to save them but since last year ive noticed that all we have gotten at this store in our area are very small weak hatchlings which means the chances of you getting a healthy gecko by the year are decreasing by ALOT. Buying from a breeder online will save you tons of time because they have all the information about the Morph, Genes, Problems such as Tail kinks or some thing a Petstore wouldnt tell you. Some places to get Geckos are,
theurbangecko.com
crestedgecko.com
Backwaterreptiles.com <----- ( This one gets there Reptiles from a big Supplier and will not release information which means its from a Reptile farm. They have a large species list but avoid buying from them. )
BHB Reptiles
LS Reptiles <---- Facebook Page
Sasobeks Reptiles <---- Facebook Page, Youtube.

Thats a list of some of the Popular sellers and theres tons more but this is what i remember. Make sure to always check the backround and ask questions like " Where do you get your animals from ". You always want to support breeders who dont get there animals from Large Reptile farms!

I have no experience with crested geckos, but $35 is a decent price. The leo's at petco are skinny because most of them are babies, and babies are always tiny and skinny. A few hours is a bit of a drive though, I always look for people within an hour of me, or look for your next reptile show, they have the biggest selection. If you don't mind morphs, then you can get normals, but some morphs have great color.

35 is pretty decent from a private breeder. Those babies look very healthy, from this point of view, so that's also a plus. Make sure to check their nose and eyes. They should have clear pink nostrils, and glossy bright eyes. Also check to see if their feet are clinging well, and that their tail isn't saggy or droopy. They should be pretty jumpy, and that's a good thing! :) Good luck!

Also in regards to Petco geckos, of any breed, I wouldn't really recommend buying them. With my Leopard Gecko experiences under my belt, I'd say it's pretty much a bad idea 90% of the time. The babies they get usually start out healthy, but over time they appear to develop some intestinal parasites that make them emaciated and unhealthy. In addition, I have seen them being fed crickets much larger than the space between their eyes- which isn't a very good thing either. Also, they are usually kept on sand. So many things contribute to those poor little things, that it's no wonder they're sick and dying.
Cresteds, on the other hand, I have seen at many Petcos and they're usually in good health. They are easier to care for, given that they don't require heat or bugs, so that's likely a good factor in that. I still wouldn't completely trust them, if given the option between that and a breeder, but I can't say I've had a personally bad experience yet. My Nigel has been healthy for over a year, knock on wood, and was in good shape when I adopted her from my local Petco.
In my whole hearted opinion, if you're going to use a petstore like that- go to Petsmart. I've seen way healthier animals there.

$35 is good for those colors, I agree they look super healthy from the pic. If you decide to ship- I've got babies popping up left and right that will be pretty well priced- deals on multiples, I'm being over run!!!

I personally have two from Petco (Cresteds that is) and they are super healthy, good eaters- I've been very fortunate.
