Thank you

Cornsnakes and kingsnakes are great starter snakes. The okeetee cornsnakes are gorgeous looking, very vivid coloring.

You would need to ask the breeder if the garter has been switched over yet to pinkies. They eat feeder goldfish as hatchlings. I wouldn't say a hognose is a good snake to start out with if you've never had snakes. Ball pythons and corns are by far the friendliest and easiest to handle for a beginner.

It depends on where you get your garter, but yes they can eat pinkys. Also, they are found to eat earthworms and fish (and some argue this is closest to their wild diet). I will tell you that goldfish are not in any circumstance an okay thing to feed them on. They contain a compound called thiaminase that blocks the absorption of Vitamin B1. You would have to ask the individual breeder of the snake you are planning on getting to find out what they have fed theirs on, as it can be tricky to get worm and fish fed snakes to switch to pinkies in some occasions.
A quick internet search showed that at least one species of garter is available in Canada (and I am sure there are plenty more, as garters can be found naturally in the southern parts of Canada), the San Francisco garter (in my opinion, the most spectacular of the garter snakes, beside Puget Sound garters)(http://www.gartersnake.info/articles/the_san_francis.php).
If you're serious about garters, I recommend you check out this forum: http://www.thamnophis.com/. Its full of people knowledgeable about garter snakes, and they can answer any questions you have.
I hope this helps a little and I'm not rambling too bad. I love garter snakes, and I heartily recommended them to anyone wanting a pet snake.
