Need some clarification on the snow morph...

Is there a snow and a Mack snow, or are all snows considered "Mack"?

If different, are they genetically unique or are they compatible?

There is the Co-dom Mack snow.
Line bred snow.
Dominant TUG snow.
Dominant Gem snow.

And... Welcome to the forums. :main_thumbsup:

Mack was the last name of a couple who discovered the snow gene. So the first snows were called "Mack" snows. They have a tendency to show some yellow as they age. The mack snow gene is co-dominant.

Line bred snows such as GEM and TUG snows are variations of mack snow. The "whitest" of the mack snows were bred repeatedly over a long span of time in order to create a snow that had little to no yellow in it whatsoever as it aged. With the intense inbreeding of the same families, the TUG and GEM snow genes were also transformed from being co-dominant to dominant.

Then there are morphs called super snows. These are the 2c gene copies of mack snows. 2 macks bred together give 25% normal, 25% super snow and 50% mack snow. Mack Super snows hold their white color much more than the regular mack snows.

So when someone makes reference to "snow", they could be talking about any one of these. But in general, you're thinking about a white-skinned gecko with black spots. Hope this helps. Welcome to the forums!

Edit: All leopard geckos are "compatible." Breeding mack snows to line-bred snows, however, distorts the blood lines and makes it difficult to predict what you'll get, or what the identity of the gecko really is.

wow...

Gems and TUGs are NOT macks. Genes don't transform from co-dom to dominant. Gem snow and TUG snows are there own separate snow morph and are BELIEVED to be dominant.

EDIT:Also there are line bred snows and they are called line bred snows not tugs or gems.

I have no idea where you received this information but, if ANY of it is true please show me...

Whoa, relax there, buddy.

I was just trying to be helpful, as I understood the genetics. The guy asked for clarification, not a mishmash of genetic jargon. Thank you for clarifying after my post though. It is news to me.

Perhaps what would be more helpful is if we had a timeline. When the mack gene was isolated, when the GEM & TUG genes were isolated. I assume the GEM & TUG genes were random morphs somehow then? And in no way associated to the mack? This way we know the relationship these all have to one another, if any. And perhaps tell us the difference between the line-bred and the GEM/TUG not only in genotype, but phenotype as well. Thanks.

Sorry! I did not mean to come off the way you think I did lol. One thing bad about forums =P.

I have no idea when TUGs and Gems came out. Mack where released in 04, I think. TUGs came from wild caught leopard geckos.
