I was feeding geckos (I feed adults every other day) and found part of a tail in one gecko's hide. He lost about 1/4 of it. I have no idea why. This is the first gecko I've had to lose a tail. He's kept alone and had no shedding issues. I have no idea why he'd drop his tail. Any ideas or is it just a weird freak thing?

It's possible. It's just a plastic container, but maybe he somehow got his tail stuck by the lid. I have no idea. I thought it might be all our construction noise, but that's been going on for over a month already. He's not a jumpy gecko, either.

Is it an Enigma? One of my MS Enigmas bit off her own tail recently (about 2 cm!!) and ate it. I found it an hour later, regurgitated in the cage. Probably not digestible. I've never had a non-Enigma gecko bite off its own tail. But I would think a gecko with bad vision might mistake it for prey if it wiggles.

Bad luck! Sorry for your (tail) loss. My MS Enigma girl looked very funny at her regrown (1 cm already) tail today, and I just thought, "oh, not again; haven't you learned from your mistake?" Nothing happened so far...

Not an enigma and it's an adult (around 3 years old). Nothing was chewed. It's just so weird. I hope it doesn't happen to any others. It really freaked me out.
