Your probably going to a commercial petstore..do you have any local reptile shops around you? They will usually sell crickets in all sizes, so you can describe to them the size of your gecko and they will give you the right sized crickets.
I used to feed 20 crickets a week to my geckos, never large, always medium. Now I feed mostly mealworms, with crickets or roaches once a month (20 per gecko, but spread out through the week)
I know what you mean..commercial pet stores will have either super tiny or super large. If that is all they have, just stick with worms. Or buy a cricket keeper, put some eggcrate/paper towels, some food (cricket food, vegetables, ect) and keep the tiny crickets until they grow a little bit.
However, I do NOT recommend throwing some small crickets in the cage and waiting for them to grow..there is no food for them usually and they probably will die, and they can bit or irritate the leopard gecko as well.
Good luck!
