One of our Geckos dropped its tail about a week ago.. From what I have read on the internet its nothing to worry a great deal about, but I still cant help but feel bad for the lil guy.. He looks so pathetic :-( Anyone have any special instructions for me? His appetite has seemed to dropped off slightly (Don't get me wrong he is still eating, just not like the pig of a self he use to be)

Someone had told me to put some neosporin on his nub and I did... I really really hope that was the right thing to do and didnt cause more harm :-( Is it normal that his appetite is a slightly less?? Im just worried because I know the tail is where all his fat reserves are stored.

I wanted to get him some Wax worms because I understand they have the highest fat content, but ill be damned not ONE of the pet stores here sell them.. They all sell the meal worms, super worms, and Crickets only. I guess the only place to get wax worms is online???

Any other precautions i should be taking? And how long before I would notice the tail growing back? And if I understand correctly the tail is going to grow back smaller and a different color?

Smaller? ;) The tails usually grow back fatter, just a bit shorter. They can change coloration and spotting. For example, you might end up with a 100% Carrot Tail :) I've seen it a couple of times. It can take months until they're fully regrown; depends on how much is missing. If it's just the tip, I would say three weeks or so.

I wouldn't do anything; just let it live on its life. I had four geckos drop (or bite off their own ones; Enigmas do that sometimes) their tails (out of about 80) and never put anything on them. They healed by themselves.

If the other geckos bully it, I would give it a separate cage so it has a chance to gain some weight and regrow a fat tail.

Good luck!

just keep checking it for any signs of infection. i agree about seperating it though. normally they will just regen with no issues on their own

So I didn't do any harm by putting neosporin on it that day though did I?

Its missing just about the whole thing (ill try to put a picture up in the morning) So what do you think about regeneration time? 2 months? 3? 4? 5? 6? more?

Sure you can :) Go ahead :)

Har Har Har.. Im so funny huh?? lol.. sorrys.. Anyways, my nephew was holding it one day (against my word, but his father (my brother) insisted it would be oik) but anyways he had it on the ground and was letting it walk around.. Well just what I was worried about happened.. It got away from him and it slipped into a crack between my fireplace mantel and the wall and disappeared. I was sure that the poor guy was gone for good and we would never see him again. Well to my surprise, and very luckily, I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom about 7 days later and I turned on the bathroom light and I saw a tail sitting on the floor in the middle of the bathroom. So I then searched around the bathroom and sure enough there he was hiding out behind the toilet. So I don't know exactly what actually made him drop his tail, but there it was, and there he was, and he seemed to be doing well.... so.... I dunno
