I am out of town and have 12hours to decide if i want to buy this solid dark (or black) juvenile leo from the P__co here.

I googled and read that Black Pearls are a hoax and i really dont have any idea what he/she is, but he/she is solid without pattern (yet?).

1. How rare are dark "patternless" leos, especially in chainstores?

2. what genetic traits can be used to breed specialty hatchling (and crossed with what)?

3. Is there anything I should look for (appearance wise) to help determine the morph/genetics of this oddity?

I should have probably made the purchase on the spot but I cant afford another setup unless it is for a "rarity/specialty." I shouldve atleast taken a picture. :(

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about it being dark due to it possibly being too cold in the cage...seeing that it's at a major chain pet store. If you were to get it home, it would probably lighten up and look more like a normal blizzard.

I studied the habitat. The airtemp gradient was from 84-90 and they were on sand :( That's another reason to buy....to rescue.

All of them were sleeping peacefully (completely sprawled out) and none look skinny. I am planning to go back in the morning and get him/her.

At the very least, how rare? And it would still atleast breed as a blazing blizzard (assuming its a dark, midnight, black Pearl, or whatever).

I've seen many young blizzards dark but it fades with age. Jet black though I have never seen. If it's a chain store you have a better chanxe of hitting the power ball then finding something rare but that doesn't mean its not a great pet. And how would you breed, not at all because you don't know the genetics behind it. BUt it still makes a greast pet

Well, turns out to be a solid violet/purple-ish Leo. Brown eyes with that little sliver of black in the middle. It's probably just a dark blizzard that was darker last night.

I bought him anyway because he is cute.

Stager, i was asking about breeding possibilities because i want my babies to grow up and make neat babies for my own collection...not for professional breeding/selling.

I dont have its dna graphed but i generally know how to track recessive and dominant traits. :)

Could be a midnight blizzard. People think midnight blizzards are a result in incubation. He may or may not lighten up as he/she gets older. Nice pick up though you can find some interesting things in petstores.

Yep. He's cool. He has very distinct male lumps and v-shaped pores. :) At the very least, he should breed as a blizzard. Maybe i will find a blizzard, albino, or something nicer. Ive got about 7 months to figure it out :)

I would pair with albino. You could get Blazing blizzards. but that will take 2 years since both blizzard and eclipse are recessive. Recessives are so cool but it takes a while to produce them.

I've been reading the dreaded internet, and I just want someone to tell me so I am sure:

What types are these eyes?

Is this probably a Mack Snow Patternless (instead of a dark blizzard)?

Btw, he has lightened up, but it might be because it's time to shed...he looks kinda dry and just a little flaky..lol.

I would not pair a pet store gecko with anything. It could already be het for a different strain of Abino or even multiple strains which would simply result in making a mess IMHO. I you want to breed I recommending buying animals from breeders with known genetics. The waters are already too muddy as it is. As far as the "Midnight Blizzard"... There is not truly such a thing. What people label as this is simply a darker blizzard which could be darker for a few reasons Enclosure temps, diet, Incubation temps... etc. It is the same thing when people label an animal as a "Chocolate Albino".... It is not its own thing. Some people just like to put theses labels on animals for some reason. This animal appears to be a regular Blizzard. Not that there is anything wrong with that, Blizzards are cool, just call it what it is.

Looks like a pretty normal colored blizzard to me. From what I've seen their colors can change quite a bit based on temps/stress/nutrition/excitement etc. Even my xanthic gal tends to be dark when I open her bin but brightens up within a few minutes of feeding. Some of my others change quite a bit too depending on shed cycle and excitement but not as dramatically.

Here is a more recent pic. I guess I need to read up on "banana blizzards" because his body bumps have turned yellow, so I wonder if that is the "trade name" for him?
