My redfoot tortoise hatchling.
He arrived here today.
Per his breeder's instructions, I fed him right out of the shipping box.
He ate like a champ, and acted like he wanted more, but I didn't give him anymore.

Excuse the sphagnum moss all over him, he was shipped in it.

He looks SO serious.
"I'm for cereal, guys! I'm so cereal."

Oh, and of course he loves his strawberry chunks.

Yeah, he got strawberry on his foot trying to rip apart the strawberry, then he stepped in his water dish, then onto the edge of the water dish, dumped it over, and managed to get strawberry in it. All within 5 minutes of being in his enclosure.

He kept trying to munch on the edge of his food plate, so I took it away and gave him a cuttle bone.
"HEY LADY GIMME THAT PLATE"

"mmm...s'cuse me, can I have sum more nomz??"

"NOMZ!"

I have always wanted a tortoise since I was very young. I'm very happy with this little guy so far.
He's been staying in his hide, which is fine, but he'll peak out every so often.
I bet he'll be out for feeding tomorrow!

I have wanted a tortoise since I was little.
They're just so awesome.

If you do decide to get one, Turtletary is the way to go. Terry knows redfoots, for sure.
His caresheet is awesome, too, because it's specifically FOR redfoots.
A lot of caresheets out there are a mix of redfoot care and various desert tortoise care.
A lot of people think they can just raise their redfoots like they are just any tortoise out there. But they're not. They're a tropical tortoise.
Their UVB requirements are not near what a desert tortoise's is.

My little guy will NEVER get store bought tortoise food pellets.
Not if I can help it.

that's adorable. I just got a redfoot at the San Francisco convention that is about the same size. I really like her. It's cute when she bobs her head in my general direction. Out of curiosity (and because I'm nosy) what does your setup look like?

Right now my enclosure is a clear plastic tub with sphagnum moss on one side with the hide on top, and then a few inches from the hide entrance, I have his soaking dish (which is a sour cream lid).
REAL simple and generic as he's still a hatchling.
My husband is going to cut half the lid to the container tonight and we're going to place half the lid on the warm side to cover it.
He spends a lot of time in his hide, as his breeder said he would.
But I don't keep a light on him all the time. I only turn the light on for him to eat.

Last issue we got was the one with the Steve Cemelli leachie article in it (Steve is Pablo's breeder).
Is there a more recent issue?

Years ago, my husband used to subscribe to Reptiles magazine, but he discontinued the subscription because he already had 839484 other magazines he was getting and I made him slim it down some.
Nothing like cleaning up a TON of magazines left all over my kitchen, livingroom, and bathroom!
