Stinky moss!!

Hey guys, I'm setting up my new terrarium as of late and I place some moistened moss into a ceramic log. The moss has been in there for no more than a day and a half and already it stinks, I mean the whole cage has a skunk to it from this moss. Its new moss, right from the package and the log was new as well.

Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any other types of moss to use, perhaps a fake one? I like the moss but not if it stinks up like this...

Try some New Zealand spagnum moss.
You can find it anywhere they sell orchids.

The moss I was using came free inside the medium snake hide, its kind of like a moist hide deal. so I'm not exactly sure what type they put in there but it sure did stink. So no problems with the new zealand moss hey?

I also use spagnum moss that you can get from any gardening center. It is WAY cheaper then buying it from a pet store, and no it does not stink.

LOL!! not only does it not stink, it has no taste either.
I ate some to find out!!

Is this a foul odor or an earthy odor, I kinda like the earthy smell of some moss maybe
that is not to your taste. If it is an earthy smell you will find most will have this "odor"

Why did you taste it? Who cares what it tastes like?

Because I knew at some point one (or more) of my leos would eat it.
And they did!!

I wanted to know in advance if it had any kind of "chemical" taste or something.

BTW, I taste the suppliment powder I dust the crix with too!!

sphagnum moss for sure i just bought a whole brick of it at home depot the other day for like $4 itll solve all your problems

its definitly not the earthy smeel that bothered me, it was a sour rotten kinda smell.

LOL!! yep, I have tried mealies, but havent gotten up the nerve yet for the crickets!
And I would rather have hot needles stuck in my eyes than eat a roach!! :main_laugh:

you can always try damp paper towels if you are worried about moss smell or even if you are worried about the leos eating the moss. i changed out my moss for paper towels and my leos seem so much happier with it.

But even better than paper towels is, a terry wash cloth, wet and folded up.
That's what I have to do with one of my males because he will eat moss, or anything else loose.
He cant swallow a wash cloth though!
