You should use the macro setting (the little flower) and hold the button down for a few seconds before taking the picture. Usually, once the camera finds the focus it'll beep or something, or make some sort of noise. Your camera should find the right focus automatically if you use that technique.

With the macro setting, you shouldnt be closer then about 80 centimeters or it will be blurry no matter what you do.

That's how my camera is at least.
