These dumb pigeons have built a nest right on the ledge over the walkway of my front door! GRR! We noticed them trying to build it several weeks ago and knocked down TWO of their attempts. Well, they left it alone for a while and we got busy, then this weekend we were doing some work out front and I noticed the nest again. We were going to knock it down but I heard the peeping of little babies and we can't bring ourselves to let baby pigeons die, so there they sit, cooing and peeping and POOPING all over our porch! SO GROSS!! :main_angry:

At this point if you relocate the nest somewhere nearby (like on an elevated platform you can build for cheap), the birds will go where the babies are and leave your porch alone. The whole 'birds can smell humans' thing is a complete myth.

Oh THAT'S fun. Maybe you could get some of those plastic mats they use in offices when there's carpet and the rolly-chairs need to roll around easier...ya know which ones i'm talking about? I think they're called "fatigue mats" or something. If the poop gets really bad, just put the mats underneath and i'm sure it would be a lot easier to wash those than your entire deck!

I would LOVE to move them, but we can't reach the nest. We had to knock down the previous ones by standing on a stool and pushing them out with a broom and that barely reached.

I will look into that! That would definitely be easier than hosing my porch down every weekend.

The even more exciting part is that I was reading about pigeons last night and a couple sites said that they like to hatch 4-5 sets of eggs a year and tend to reuse their nests, so we definitely need to find a permanent way to keep them out of there.

You could get those things public buildings have to keep out pigeons. The best way to describe it is like a giant plastic mascara brush that you put on a ledge/perch the pigeons use. Its just plastic spikes spaced really close together that the birds can't perch on and so they go somewhere else.
