I just got my new tanks setup with tile. The heat comes through perfectly and it looks awesome. And you can get a wide variety of different colors and styles. Finally, for the tile I got cut to fix two 10 gallon tanks it only cost like $5-7.

While the stones being at the size of 2 cm, would probably be too big for the gecko to ingest. It will create hiding spots for crickets and worms. Not to mention cleaning the stones once the geckos soils them. I just feel that loose stones will be more of a hassle for you in the long run. Also you don't know how weel the stones will heat up for your gecko to lay on. Slate tile is the closest and safest form of substrate, if you are trying to duplicate their natural environment.

Trust me when I say your gecko doesn't care what his cage looks like. As long as he has hides, heat and food/water, he WILL be happy.
