Right now on the hot side i have nothing, cold side paper towels, My UTH is at 93 degrees at low setting so Im thinking I need to get a substrate to lower it. Suggestions?

Alot of people use tile. If your UTH is on low than you'll be able to turn it up if the tiles too thick. Or why not repticarpet?

I've always used paper towels... but I'm thinking of switching to tile in my 75 gallon tank. The racks and quarantine bins will still have paper towel substrate though.

i doubt it very much. the uth would have to get much hotter than 90 some to ignite a paper towel. i would go with tile though, it's pretty cheap and easy to clean, plus it looks nicer.

i wouldn't grout the tiles in place, i have really fine sand in the cracks between mine but if you get them cut to fit tight enough together you wouldn't even need anything between them.

I also use tile, I have a 1cm+ thick gap between the tile and the tank, and I roll up paper towel to fill the gap. I prefer to have a larger gap, because I don't want to risk their little fingers getting caught in a tiny narrow gap.

Another tile user here. My tank is big enough for me to use the 12" X 12" ceramic tiles. There is sand between the cracks as well.:D
