Personally I would not use sand. It can cause impaction even to the oldest leopard gecko. Leopard Geckos come free Hard Clay Areas not sandy areas.

Why do you want it? And usually you have to make it yourself, so why take the risk of doing it wrong and killing your gecko?

It'd be easier to go a safer more natural way.

I think your misunderstanding about tile? Its flat how does it mess up their nails? The only substrate that can sometimes rip off your leopard geckos nail is reptile carpet.

I would suggest using reptile carpet because i ues it and it works just find. And if you are looking for a hard clay you can buy stuff called "Excavator clay" by zoo med and you can buy it at most pet stores including pet co

Yeah reptile carpet has always worked well for me, you can also buy slate tiles from any hard ware store, and they look really nice and hold heat well for belly heat.

But on the Package it says that the clay should not be heated ;)

regarding the clay,
I bought a few bags when it fist came out (this was before I educated myself) and used it for a bit. I noticied that as it dried, small peices would crumble/grind off and collect at the lowest points. It was EXACTLY like sand, and after discovering that I never reccomend it to anyone, infact I highly discourage using it. Tile does not mess up there nails at all...
