Sudden, unprovoked, dropped tail?

One of my boyfriend's girls just dropped her tail yesterday. We have no idea why. He reached his hand in her cage and all of a sudden her tail started to spaz out. Did he spook her or something? There was no physical trauma. At all. The middle got all rigid and before the night was up, she'd dropped it.

He'd moved her to a new enclosure early yesterday. Could that have something to do with it? We've always kept her mostly in the dark, and the new enclosure was in the light--right by the window. But we didn't expect her to freak out like she did.

We'd just been talking about how she was too fat and we should stop feeding her every day. Now I guess we're going to be giving her more food to compensate for the loss of that tail :/

Poor girl, that's really weird. Do you think it could have been injured before he put his hand in? Is she housed alone?

I read they can do that if they feel they are in danger. But if they have been handle before i dont know why it would happen from that. Maybe something fell on it? Poor thing, hope it gets better soon.

Yep, she's housed alone. We transport her and our other two in deli cups when we go back and forth from school. We just came back yesterday. I'd say maybe her tail got caught in the lid, but it seems the middle was the injured part--if there was indeed a part that was injured--not the tip. So I don't know. I don't see how she could have hurt herself...or how we could have hurt her.

Yeah, she's handled on a daily basis...for hours at a time. She's in no way afraid of either of us. Which is why this caught me off guard.

They can get stressed if they are transported to much. A deli cup is not very big, I dont see how that can work for them??

That's how geckos are shipped, I don't see a problem with it. I've never had a problem transporting them this way. We don't move them every day. Our breaks from school are usually every couple months, we usually stay a week or so at home. They're usually fine.
