Super worms

I purchased a few super worms at a local pet store today wanting to start using them instead of mealworms but when I looked them I saw that they are the most monumental things I have ever seen and started to question if they were safe. If any one uses them or has any experience with them I would love to hear any advice that you have. Thanks

I buy Medium supers at my local big box -Co store for my adult leos, all over 45-50g, and Small supers for my <45g leos. As I understand it, superworms can give a painful bite, so I tend to tong-feed them to my less astute hunters and only bowl-feed the ones that remember to chew well, lol.

I stick with the Medium size. I have two males who could manage the larger supers... they're 93g and 101g, with lengths and proportions to match (so not obese). Since I have 10 geckos, though, it's easier to just buy mediums for all.

Most geckos above 35-40g can handle large supers just fine. Just make sure your gecko is a prolific hunter and crunches the head on the way in. If you have a soft eater that does not crunch the head, then I would suggest pinching the head before feeding. That'll take care of any concerns you may have regarding safety.

I've had no problems feeding supers to any of my geckos. I get them by the thousand and they don't come in specific sizes. I've been able to feed the medium sized supers that I pick out to geckos as small as 11 grams without a problem. They are the staple food for most of my adults and one of my fat tails is quite fond of them as well.

What is the benefit of supers over mealies? Right now my adults over 45g eat Giant Mealworms. I've considered supers because they probably are more filling per worm but they kind of freak me out haha. Are they nutritionally better than mealies?

Supers can be kept at room temperature and they won't pupate unless kept alone. This allows you to feed them and gut-load them better. Nutritionally they aren't too much different except of course supers are more meaty and contains more moisture.

Giant mealworms are treated with growth hormones, whether that's good or bad, people have different feelings about them.
