Superworms

The place where I buy my mealworms, silkworms and crickets advised me not to feed my group of geckos superworms....but then I read here that quite a few people regularly feed the superworms. Do you feed supers based on the size of the gecko....say 50 grms and above? Do they ever have trouble digesting the exoskeleton or other issues? Thanks

I feed my adults supers 3 - 4 times a year but not as a staple, never had any problems with them. I get them once every 4 months and they get a few a week til the run out.

2 of my geckos eat superworms regularly with crickets, mealworms and silkworms on rare occasion. They are my 2 biggest geckos (106 and 100 gr) and very healthy.

I'm guessing they are confusing giant mealworms with superworms. Giant mealworms are fed chemicals, and are best to avoid giving to your geckos. As far as I know, nothing is wrong with the superworms, and many breeders use them.

All of my adults have been eating superworms for 2 years now without any problem. The juvies and babies eat mealworms and crix. I don't know about everyone else but as soon as I change the juvies' diet to supers, they bulk up real nice!

I feed supers to geckos 40 grams and up. They're a lot more active than mealworms so they're a much more attractive prey item.

I believe that I have mis-spoken. I was talking about the giant mealworms...and the owner of the reptile shop didn't really say why, just said it is best to stay away from them. Part of being a newbie is getting the terms right. Sorry for the confusion on my part.

I believe that the "giant mealworms" are fed an insect growth hormone. I don't know whether or not it would have any adverse affect on a gecko. There is a little info about them on NYWorms website.

I feed mine a mixture of mealies and supers (occasionally crix when someone is being finicky). Never had a problem with the supers except that they really flail around when they bite into them. Give them to adults, not to juvies or babies.
But I also agree I think they are talking about giant mealies and not supers. Though I was reading that some places have found another way to stop mealies from turning into beetles without using chemicals, but I don't remember what they did...

i heard if you put a mealies in a fride, there bodies slow down and they dont turn into beatles, and once you takem out of the fride, since its warmer, they strt to regain control of their bodies, and start moving around

I feed supers to all my leos including hatchlings. Yes hatchlings can eat supers, you just have to get the real small ones for them, same size as small mealies.
