I had a pair of twins hatch in 2008. One was albino Het raptor the other was Het raptor. Maybe it has something to do with the raptor/eclipse trait. I have never seen it before either. I am going to test breed to see if it will happen again.

It's things like this that make life worth living. I love pleasant startling surprises, this is just too much awesome for any human language to convey!!!

Love and strength to those little ones, they are one of the most incredible things I've ever heard of or seen!

Congratulations!

Oh wow! Good luck with those little ones!

I know human babies that are twins often lose some of the indentations they earn by being bunched up with another baby, so perhaps your little guy will lose his!

Either way this is amazing! Nice picture!

I want to see some pics of these guys when they get older.... to see if they look exactly like each other (I dont know if thats how it works, I would assume so just like a human egg and sperm yadda yadda yadda).

Khrysty, you would automatically think that because they hatched from the same egg it would mean they have to be monozygotic or identical twins... This can go one of two ways...

Polar Body Twining is the result of one egg splitting and then being fertilized by a separate sperm making the offspring "half identical"... This is very rare and has not been studied enough to be proven...

So what could have happend here??? Its pretty simple actually... Leopard geckos have two eggs per clutch... This makes the clutchmates dizygotic or fraternal twins in all cases... What most likely went on here is that 3 eggs were droped from the ova, all 3 eggs were ferilized by seperate sperm... The egg follicle then formed over one fertile egg and the other follicle formed over two feralized eggs...

So basically reptile and bird eggs are external placentas if that makes it easier to understand... What we are seeing here is an actual case of triplets and not twins...

I asked my IB Biology 2 teacher and my anatomy teacher about this case of "twins" and they both gave me the "triplets" answer. this is awesome!
