Swelling in legs, armpit bubble

Hello,

I have had Ari for about a year and a half now, feeding her on dusted crickets and mealworms, housed on carpet with an under the tank heat pad, moist hut with moss. They used to have vermiculite until I found it in their poop and switch it for moss. She shares a 20 gallon long tank with another female leopard gecko who is not exhibiting any of Ari's symptoms. The two are not aggressive toward one another.

One week ago, I noticed Ari was walking oddly because her two front legs and back right leg were slightly swollen. Plus she seemed lethargic and the bubbles under her armpits (which she has always had) seemed to be larger. Days prior she had started refusing food and was becoming less active. Concerned, I took her into the vet.

The vet found dried white residue around her vent. She asked if I had seen Ari poop, and as there were two lizards in the tank, I couldn't say for sure. She suggested Ari might be dehydrated and prescribed daily warm water soaking, antibiotics, hand-feeding carnivore care mix via syringe and medication for a parasite (which could be causing the armpit bubbles).

Ari still refuses live food, and spits it out when I put it into her mouth, but will accept the mix if fed from a syringe. Her poop is not solid, more like the consistency of diarrhea. However, the white part of the poop (uric acid?) is solid and intact. The bubbles seem to be getting larger and the leg swelling has gotten worse. Her activity level has not decreased and seems to perk up a little after a soak.

The vet has asked for a fecal sample, but I am having trouble getting a fresh deposit as she poops during the night and by the time I wake up, it is completely dried out.

I am hoping that someone out there has an idea of what is wrong with Ari. I have owned leopard geckos for about 15 years and have never seen something like this before and am very worried.

are you sure that she dose not have stuck shed on her toes? that's the only thing I think could cause swelling that wouldn't be constant all over.
Has your vet checked her for MBD? that dose also cause swelling of limbs some times.
what are you temps? as her tail dose look a little on the thin side considering shes eating.
As far as I have been informed the bubbles under the arms is nothing to worry about, well all mine have them any way.
also runny pooh is normal when wormer is used, it should harden up in a few days/weeks.

I would be worried too. Good job getting her to the vet ASAP. Have you separated her from the other gecko?

Her limbs look super swollen. The armpit bubbles can be normal but the ones in your pictures look larger and lower than most that I've seen. As Katie asked, has your vet seen the swelling? If not I would bring her in for a recheck ASAP.

Best of luck and keep us posted on what happens!

Did you accidently over inflate him when you first got him? Those instructions are REALLY confusing. I accidently left the air hose in mine to long and had to let some of the air out... now hes all flabby. But dont worry, its a quick fix, just pop a small hole, let some air out and then patch it with some tape when your done.

I took Ari back to the vet yesterday to have blood drawn for testing. The vet called back today with the results and Ari has kidney failure. The test for uric acid level was at least 3 times what it should be and her phosphorus was very high. She does indeed have gout, which is a result of the kidney failure.

I want to talk to the vet about what caused this. None of the other geckos, including Ari's tank mate, have shown signs of illness. If it was due to bad husbandry or oversight on my part, I need to know what to change so the rest of my geckos do not end up like Ari. I am very worried that the others will begin to get sick.

At this point there is nothing we can do except make her comfortable through therapy/medication (which will not buy her time) or euthanasia. Although I want to be with her as long as possible before she passes, it wouldn't feel right to prolong what she is going through. I will probably be taking her to the vet tomorrow or Saturday to have her euthanized.

Thank you all for your advice and well-wishes.

Im sorry to hear about Ari.
I would seperate the geckos at least until you can fine out the cause of this issue, if not permanently seperated. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry to hear the bad news :(.
I would have to agree about separating the others just in case, although the likely hood is that it isnt any thing contagious. imo if the vet did think it was something the others could get they would have told you.
Gout is very painful combined with kidney failure its only going to get worse maybe putting her to sleep is the best thing you can do.
keep us all posted on what the vet says that could have caused it as it would be interesting to know.
